I love this, Leanne. "Politeness and manners are the stitches in the fabric of society." So good. I remember when my kids had their first experience with Siri, they started experimenting with speaking rudely to her. And I was like, "No, it's important to be polite, even to Siri!" Those ingrained habits, the social norms —they help our communities to be stronger. Thanks for writing this!
Yes I did the same! I dislike using Siri for that reason. (Also she never quite understands what we want to know.) But you bring up a good point that AI is only going to add more stress to the human system. That something I should've added to my post. Maybe it needs a part two.
I dont use Siri, but my first experience having a "conversation" with ChatGP i found myself thinking through what applies when speaking to AI? I realised it mattered to me that I still engaged rather than demanded and conversed rather than dictated. Manners and kindness matter, they are an expression of who we are and the world we are trying nurture.
I was also brought up to have manners and show politeness and respect to others. In today’s atmosphere of “unkindness” I am trying to show kindness and respect to others. My mother who, like yours was very kind, taught us six children that you “get what you give.”
We all have to be the change we want to see! It can be hard not to look at the whole world and grow hopeless, but you seem able to focus on your own actions and know you're making a difference. That's something I'm working on at this stage in my life.
