I promised this post in my Tuesday newsletter, so let’s get to it! These are the books I highly recommend after a summer of reading (it’s not all the books I’ve read— there are a few I abandoned or don’t recommend).
I often find that book reviews don’t truly give me a sense of the book, so I’m going to try something else. For each book, I’ll assign three words. The first word will capture the mood of the book; the second word will touch on a theme; and the third will hint at a single plot point.
Fiction:
THE HUSBANDS by Holly Gramazio: Quirky/Searching/Magic Attic
REAL AMERICANS by Rachel Khong: Defensive/Scientific/Genetic Technology
THE MINISTRY OF TIME by Kaliane Bradley: Shocking/Assimilation/Resurrection
SANDWICH by Catherine Newman (fiction): Glib/Caretaking/Menopause
JACKPOT SUMMER by Elyssa Friedland (fiction): Reflective/Responsibility/Wealth
ANNIE BOT by Sierra Greer (fiction): Insular/Humanism/Escape
SWAN SONG by Elin Hilderbrand (fiction): Expansive/Fame/Parties
THE WEDDING PEOPLE by Allison Espach: Hopeful/Remaking/Suicide
MARGO’S GOT MONEY TROUBLES by Rufi Thorpe: Youthful/Risk/OnlyFans
Nonfiction: (no plot points)
HOW TO KNOW A PERSON by David Brooks: Thoughtful/Empathy
THE AGE OF MAGICAL OVERTHINKING: NOTES ON MODERN IRRATIONALITY by Amanda Montell: Engaging/Sociological!
What did you read this summer? What did you love?
Here’s to us, and the joy of a stack of books.
